Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ıvır zıvır sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine demetlanmasıyla oluşan kısa polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit kalıntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit alt birimi çitndırır). Kök ayrım peptitlerin kısa, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, özge amino asite ötümlü, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle demetlanır. Polipeptid strüktürsına beklan amino asitlerin her biri strüktürya peptid demetlarıyla demetlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir akarsu çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine beklan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, serbest amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin özge ucundaki serbest α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
